Bowood Farms opened the doors of its Central West End location in April 2006. Bowood Farms began in Clarksville, Missouri in 1989 as a wholesale supplier of containerized plants, specializing in perennials. In 2004 Bowood decided to make a change and enter the St. Louis retail market. The Central West End was chosen as the location for the new garden center to be a part of the growing urban renewal of the City of St. Louis and historical family ties to the area.
The building that Bowood occupies was built in 1920 and was originally used for automotive repair and later plastics and cabinet manufacturing. The rehab of the building began in January 2005 and it was filled with plants by April 2006. We utilized many green building practices which include: the installation of a living, green roof; optimizing the use of natural light; in-floor radiant heat; and the use of environmentally friendly construction materials.
Bowood still grows much of what we sell at our growing facility in Clarksville. We receive weekly shipments of plants Fresh From the Farm in Clarksville, Missouri. We specialize in perennials, herbs, groundcovers, Missouri native plants, roses and shrubs. We have supplemented our plant list with trees, annuals, tropicals, houseplants, plant maintenance items, containers and gifts. We are a full service garden center open throughout the year. We are one of the few locally; family owned garden centers located in the City of St. Louis.
