Allium schoenoprasum

Allium schoenoprasum (Chives)

Chives

Edible flowers of small pale purple, form a dense globular umbel at top of stem in summer. Leaves are slender dark green, sweet mild onion flavor.

Growing & Maintenance Tips
Needs well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Cut chives all the way back to soil level, to encourage soft green growth as opposed to woody growth. Feed regularly with diluted fish emulsion, after repeated cuttings, in order to replace lost nutrients.Chives are added to soups and salads. Use the finely cut leaves in cheese spreads, mashed potatoes, dilled cucumbers.

Interesting Information
Clumps of flowering chives make attractive borders for vegetable, herb, and flower gardens. Basically for culinary uses; can also be used to combat black spot on roses, if planted near them.
