Medium-wet soils in full sun. Useful as a tall background plant or screen. At home in mass plantings or naturalized areas, it excels along highways and is a good plant to use for erosion control; open prairies.

Big Blue Stem has a good fall color in varying bronze tones, and the color persists into winter. Use cut flowers in fresh or dried arrangements.
